After Riding a Horse
by Karina Ventura

I liked riding horses. I had never ridden a horse. The name of the one I rode was Jack. He was nice. He made me think that I was riding him by myself and that he was running around. It was run to ride horses. They are really sweet to me and it made me think he was my own horse. I would like to have one like Jack. They do sound funny when they walk, as if they were dancing.

An Angel, to God
by Yessica Alarcon

You are so so so nice god
and nice to people
Why are you so kind and nice?
I love god a lot, you do good things to people
and do not let people be punching at each other.
You are a very very nice man.

Baptism in Chicago, 1953
by Alejandra Lloyd
(after a photograph by Gordon Parks)

One day I went to get baptized. The pastor said to wear
something white. I put on my white dress with flowers. I went to
church on time. The pastor said forme to come up front. I stood
in the water and he pushed me back. I went under the water and
came back up. Now I am baptized and I am a Christian.

Bird
by Lannie Zelaya

My bird is beautiful and it loves me. It is a baby bird. My baby bird is just two years old. It was born on January 2. My bird was inside a bird. She was a woman. When the baby came out of her the woman died. She told me to take good care of her little baby and never tell the baby who her real mother was. They the woman died. Then I cried with tears and the baby cried with tears, too. I said don't worry little baby, I'll be your mom now and I'll take good care of you, and I did. I name the baby bird Felicia. It was a baby girl. When I took the baby home I fed it worms and bread. Then the bird didn't like worms. So now she eats bread. Now the bird is happy. That is how my baby bird was born.

Child in Window, Paris, 1950

I'm happy because I see my papa after not seeing him for
a long time. My papa looks young, but he's a little old.
I was just looking out the window and I was surprised to see my papa.

Drugs
by Samrawit Belai

When I was walking home I saw one of my friends was using drugs and she asked me if I wanted some and I said no and she beat me up and after I went home my mom saw me and she went to the girl with police and the girl got life in prison and her name was Sophia.
